easyjet, Europe’s leading low cost airline, and SkyEurope, Central Europe’s first low cost airline and the largest carrier at Warsaw’s Etiuda terminal, jointly express their concern about unfair practices of LOT Polish Airlines with regards to slot allocation at Warsaw Airport’s Etiuda terminal.

The slot coordinator at Warsaw Airport, an employee of LOT Polish Airlines, intends to retrieve historical slots from all existing operators at the Etiuda terminal – currently easyJet, Germanwings, SkyEurope and Wizz Air – to reallocate them in a lottery. Such a lottery would jeopardize the integrity of the existing carriers’ operation, since all carriers already published their summer 2005 schedule, which have been approved by the ‘Polish Airports State Enterprise (PPL). Moreover PPL expressed in a letter filed with the Polish Civil Aviation Authority their strong objection against such behavior.

Furthermore, such an action would be illegal and in contradiction with Council Regulation (EEC) No 95/93 of 18 January 1993 on common rules for the allocation of slots at Community airports.

easyJet and SkyEurope condemn the lack of independence of the slot coordinator, employed and paid by LOT Polish Airlines. Attempting to provide Centralwings – fully owned by LOT Polish Airlines – with access to the lower-cost Etiuda terminal at the expense of existing operators is unacceptable. Both easyJet and SkyEurope always acted in good faith, relying on Polish Airports State Enterprise (PPL) decisions.

SkyEurope– This unfair practice of LOT Polish Airlines threatens PPL’s reliability as the airport authority. We are glad to compete on commercial terms with LOT and Centralwings, but expect them to respect EU Regulations. We appeal to the Polish Civil Aviation Authority to urgently solve this matter. said Christian Mandl, Chief Executive of SkyEurope Airlines.

Gyorgy Peto, easyJet’s Manager for Hungary & Poland said –This is blatantly anti-competitive behavior that is clearly illegal under European law. We will take all action necessary to ensure that proper competition is upheld.
